Photo Viewer Overview and Analysis |
One of the on line retailers that has given us some very good security
boxes for our cameras also now has this viewer he is going to retail.
The $50 price was the first thing that caught my eye. If this thing
works it will be less than half price of many others. This is actually a
digital picture frame disguised as a viewer; it has a large 3.5 inch
screen and a toggle setup on the front of the viewer. On the right side
is the on/off switch and USB port and the left side has the SD card
slot. Very solid and no frills like MP-3 or ear phones, this is just a
viewer for pictures that are stored in JPG on an SD card. This 5 ½ X 3 ½
X ½ inch viewer is mat black in color and simple to operate. Lithium ion
rechargeable battery (fixed) that is charged by a supplied wall wart or
can also be hooked to USB for the same purpose. This is a very basic but
very functional viewer. Install your card and hit the power switch and
the screen will display the first picture on the card. You can then
select the left right to move through the pictures of there are two
other options. The first is to hit the toggle button with the multi
sheet icon on it and this puts you in a slide show of what is stored on
the card. The other option is to hit the bottom button displaying four
little squares which is the thumb nail icon and you can then toggle
through each thumb nail. This is just a pretty cool little viewer and it
works great. No video capabilities, but it has a lot going for it as a
viewer. We have no Idea of how long the battery will last because most
of these devices have auto shutdown so if it is idle for a short period
it will turn off. I cant say much more about this viewer except I am
impressed so far and the price is pretty good to. I especially like the
slide show feature which when I am in the field and under rough
conditions I don’t need to be trying to hit a bunch of buttons to view
the pictures.05-01-2009 update:
Both Anthony and myself have gained a degree of gray hair over
getting through the viewer reviews. We both can dissect a camera in
a matter of minutes but these cranky handfuls have worn our patience
thin at times. With a pile of these devices on top of our field bag
on the rack of the ATV and we needed to view a picture real quick to
see just why a camera was in the position we found it in. I would
every time pick this viewer up first. It is just very simple and is
a great picture viewer. Not having the video capabilities just
didn’t seem to matter in most cases. We run a lot of cameras and
normally just swap out the card and go on our way until we are back
in the shop to view the cards in the comfort of the expensive
air-conditioning and not hunkered down under a tree. We have on
occasion, when we needed immediate information and that is when the
card reader became effective tool to have in our inventory. This
particular tool seems to fit very well. I might even keep one of the
other video capable readers in my bag just in case we just had to
view a video in the field. With the price of this viewer, having to
have an additional video viewer might still be in line and pulled
out when needed. 05-10-2009 update:
We ventured out after a two week period of almost solid rain to finally check
out cameras down south on one of our testing areas. This time my tote bag seemed
much lighter because there was only one viewer in the bag along with a stack of
spare cards and batteries. This week we did not have an occasion to have to use
the viewer because everything was in order and we just swapped out the cards and
upgraded the feeders with corn and re energized the licks with new attractant.
We have chosen this reader for a bit of a long term project and will on occasion
report as time goes on. So far this is first class for SD cards when it comes to
JPG pictures. 07-17-2009 update: After
many trips we still like to pick up this viewer and slip it into the pack to
accompany us to the field. We have other new equipment that is now pouring in
from our orders and it is going to require we close this review. This does not
mean we will park this device by any means. I will still make it along with us
to the field as long as it lasts. This review is closed. |
